Chapter One
A sixteen year old Simon Grace ran through the woods, yet again trying to run from the goblins. "What have you gotten yourself into Simon Grace?" He grumbled to himself. As he skidded around a tree he heard a scream, the type that makes your blood run cold because you know someone's about to be torured to death. The sound had come from the street before their house. Now instead of worrying about his well being, Simon ran to help the tortured person. As he ran he heard a female voice cry out in pain, "PLEASE, PLEASE someone help me!!!Please...AAAHHH!!!" Simon paled, he knew that voice, it belonged to Serai Jackson in his english class.
As his foot hit the blacktop of the street he saw Serai being dragged on her belly, pulled by her feet. Her face was frantic with fear from being unable to see her attackers, and wincing in pain. Her eyes met Simon's and he saw the tears in them, "Help..."she whispered as she was pulled into the forest on the opposite side of the street.
Simon took out his cellphone and contacted his brother, Jared. "Come on Jared, answer the freaken phone." He muttered under his breath as he ran across the street. "Hello?" Came his brothers voice. "Thank God! Jared the Goblin's have Serai." There was silence from Jared for a few seconds, "Uh, Simon who's Serai?" Simon mentally slapped himself. "Jared, she's in at least three of your classes. Long golden blonde hair, blueish greenish eyes, tall, kinda quiet. Whatever, it doesn't matter who she is just get Mal and help me get her." Jared sighed, "Where are you?" Simon grinned he could always depend on Jared when he needed help. "I'm in the woods across the interstate. Hurry Jared!" He hung up the phone and continued following the trail left from Serai's body being drug on the ground.
He heard another scream pass from Serai's lips, but it couldn't be. He'd been so close how had they gotten so far away?He picked up his pace attempting not to trip over any roots. He jumped over a snake hole and slammed into a tree. Ignoring the blood pooling from his nose he picked himself up from the ground and continued running. "Hold in there Serai." He thought to himself. A cry of pain, it was closer now. Simon started hearing the heavy breathing of the goblins, they had to be close. "Put her in the cage, put her in the cage. And make sure it's locked this time!" He heard a voice bark not fifteen meters away. "But aren't we going to cook her Snarlfange?" "I'm in charge and I said put her in the bloody cage."
Simon walked slowly closer to the voices and saw a clearing. There were crude cages made of iron and wood hanging from tree limbs, there was a fire burning with what looked like a chickens carcass skewered on a roasting spit, there were about tweenty goblins most sloshing down beer or something of the sort. His eyes darted to Serai who was being lifted in to a tree. She was curled up on the floor of the cage trembling and most presumably crying. Simon wiped his nose with his arm and noticed the excessive amount of blood pouring from it. He ripped the end of his shirt and squeezed his nose. When it stopped bleeding he placed the bloody shirt material in his pants pocket.
He walked slowly around the camp towards Serai's cage. When he got next to the tree she was trapped in he noticed a slight problem. The tree was practically bone straight, and the only trees lose enough to jump from were too close to the camp. Simon sighed and walked towards the tree. He jumped up for the lowest branch, but his finger tips merely brushed the bark. He threw back his head and silently cursed. Taking a step back he glanced around him for anything that would help him into the tree. He was about to give up when a hand suddenly clamped over his mouth and pulled him away from the camp.
Simon thrashed his head back and forth just trying to get a glance of who had captured him. "Geese Simon Chill"Mallory hissed in his ear as she removed her hand from his mouth. "Mal! Why'd ya have to freak me out like that?" Mallory through her hands up in the air, "If I hadn't you would've made a huge noise and ruined our rescue mission." Simon looked around him, "Where's Jared?" Mallory pointed to the opposite side of the camp, "He's our distraction. I'm going to get you into the tree but you have to do everything from there out because I'm going to help Jared so he doesn't get his butt whooped." Mallory handed him a dagger and then walked back towards the camp.
As Mallory pushed Simon into the tree he heard Jared burst into the camp screaming something he couldn't comprehend. "Get up there, I've got to go." Mallory hissed. Simon pulled his legs onto the branch, and then he was alone. He jumped from one branch to the next until he was just one branch away. "Serai, Serai!" He whispered. She looked up with flushed cheeks and tears streaming, "Simon."she whispered in relief, "Please help me." Simon nodded and jumped to the next branch.
He cut the bindings to the door but the knife fell to the ground when he was done. "Serai, when I say three grab onto my arm and step out of the cage." She looked him in the eye and you could tell she was thinking, 'There's no way he can hold me up with one arm. "Trust me," He whispered. Serai nodded and took Simon's hand, "One."He whispered. "...Two" Serai mumbled. "Three." They said together. Serai jumped from the cage, and for a moment they both thought they were going to fall but simon slowly pulled her on to the branch next to him.
Serai's body trembled as she shook her head and mumbled, "I've gone mad." Simon laughed, "Not quite, come back to the house with me, Mal, and Jared and we'll explain it all." She opened her eyes and nodded, "okay." she whispered. Simon stood up and dropped himself onto a lower branch, "Come on down, I'll catch you if you fall." Serai just laughed and jumped next to him. Soon enough they were on the ground, "Come on, I need to help Mal and Jared."
Simon went to the spot where he'd seen the dagger fall to the ground, but it wasn't there anymore. "Serai didn't the dagger fall here? ...Serai?" He turned his head and saw Serai had her back to him and was staring at the sky. And then he saw it. The goblin behind the tree holding his dagger. "Serai!" He cried out.. Right when she turned the dagger was thrust deep into her chest. He saw her eyes full of surprise, and then pain, and then they went blank as she fell to the ground. Simon strangled the goblin and then crawled over to Serai.
He pressed his fingers to her neck desperate forr a pulse but felt nothing. He pressed the bloody clothe against her chest trying to stop the blood flow, maybe he could get her back if he did. After five minutes he knew it wasn't going to work. Tears fell from Simon's eyes as he picked up her limp body and walked into the middle of the camp. Dead goblins lay on the ground all around him but he didn't even notice. Mallory and Jared came back into camp wipeing the green blood from their swords when they saw Serai in Simon's arms and the tears falling from his eyes. "Simon..."Mallory whispered taking a step towards him. He shook his head and looked into his sister's eyes.
"We need to get to the elves Mal, I know what I'm going to ask for now." Jared walked to his brother, "We already got what we asked for Simon, we asked for Uncle Arthur remember?" Simon shook his head, "You asked for Uncle Arthur, they have to give us each something. Otherwise it's not fair, it's just not fair." Simon whispered in a choked voice. "It's true," Mallory whispered, "I asked for something and they gave it to me, Simon's the only one who hasn't asked for anything yet."
Jared nodded,"Maybe Aunt Lucy can give us a ride, it would look kind of suspicous if we walked everywhere with a dead body in arms don't you think?" Mallory placed her hands on her hips, "I can drive you know. How do you think we got here so fast?" Jarred shrugged, "I just think Aunt Lucy would like to be there ya know?" Simon heard little of his siblings petty argument, his eyes were transfixed on Serai as he made her a silent promise. "I'll save you Serai, I will." A tear fell onto Serai's blood stained chest.
